About the Chorus
A New Kind of Chamber Choir in Oakland, CA
AfterGlow Chorus is a fun-loving ensemble of experienced, highly-skilled singers from a variety of musical backgrounds. Many of the singers have studied music at a conservatory or sung in choirs and other vocal ensembles in college. This select, auditioned group of 36 singers has come together to perform a broad range of pieces across genres at the a high level of musicianship and quality.
Some of the choir's singers are active, professional musicians. Other vocalists of the chorus are music teachers, while still other singers are passionate, amateur musicians with daytime careers in other professions (e.g, lawyers, engineers, teachers, college students, graduate students). All are enthusiastic in the pursuit of making fun, joyful music together through the unique pleasure that only comes with singing in harmony.
AfterGlow's mission is to perform beautiful choral works of all genres with the highest level of musicianship and emotional meaning. Our goal is to tap into the joy within us by singing beautiful music of all genres that is emotionally meaningful.
Musical genres performed by the chorus include Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, 21st Century, spirituals, pop, rock, R&B, and jazz. Both a cappella (traditional and contemporary) works as well as accompanied pieces are performed.
Our recent concerts were in the beautiful First Presbyterian Church and Church of All Faiths in Oakland, CA (each with its wonderful acoustics), The concerts were roaring successes in front of enthusiastic audiences.
Selections included a movement from the Brahms Requiem, Purcell's masterpiece "Hear My Prayer," several stunning African-American spirituals, Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles, "Stand Up" by Cynthia Erivo (from the movie "Harriet"), "You're All I Need to Get By" by Marin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and the gospel classic "Total Praise" by Richard Smallwood.
