The Sound of the East Bay: From "Lean on Me" to "Purple Reign"

As we count down the weeks until our first rehearsals begin on March 16, we’ve been looking back at the moments that define the AfterGlow Chorus experience here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Last summer, during our Healing & Heart series, we performed an arrangement of Bill Withers’ classic "Lean on Me" at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Oakland. It’s a song everyone knows, but our goal was to find the deeper layers of harmony and connection that exist within our local community.
A Destination for Choral Excellence in the Bay Area
That performance represents what we strive for in every season: technical precision used to create a genuinely moving experience for our East Bay audience.
This April, we are taking that same energy into Purple Reign, our 10th-anniversary tribute to Prince. Just as we explored the soulful roots of Bill Withers, we are now diving into the sophisticated arrangements of Prince's hits, the Gospel-Classical mastery of Richard Smallwood, and the high-octane drive of Moses Hogan.
Whether you are joining us from San Francisco, Berkeley, or right here in Oakland, the "AfterGlow Sound" remains focused on vocal excellence and music that carries weight.
Don't Miss a Landmark SF Bay Area Event
A 10th anniversary only happens once. We invite you to join us at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Oakland (located at Lake Merritt in Oakland) to see how this ensemble translates the genius of Prince through the power of a chamber choir. Tickets are moving quickly across the Bay Area, and we recommend securing yours now for the best seating.
