For the experienced vocalist, a choir is only as rewarding as the standard it demands. Explore the technical challenge behind our upcoming repertoire.

"There is a rare kind of joy that comes from standing in a section where everyone has completely mastered the score before the first downbeat. You aren’t learning notes; you are shaping something incredibly beautiful from day one." > — AfterGlow Chorus Musician

For an experienced singer, the San Francisco Bay Area offers plenty of places to casually read through charts. But it is incredibly rare to find an ensemble that protects your time, matches your vocal caliber, and dedicates itself entirely to uncompromising musical excellence.

AfterGlow Chorus is built specifically for musicians who crave that level of artistic intensity. We don't coast on standard community choir arrangements; we build high-octane, technically precise spaces where exceptional voices can stretch their capabilities. Performing primarily a cappella, a growing reputational hallmark of our choir is the ability to master a vast, diverse range of musical genres with deep stylistic integrity and a beautiful, renowned ensemble sound.

Our upcoming summer project, "The Gift of Love," is designed to do exactly that.

What does it actually feel like to stand in our ranks? Our upcoming summer program requires exceptional vocal control, breath stamina, and absolute rhythmic precision.

Listen to the seamless tuning, the lush textures, and the authentic ensemble sound performing "Away in the Manger," arranged by the brilliant contemporary composer Lucy Walker, live in concert during our recent winter cycle:

The Repertoire: Genre-Spanning Choral Excellence

The score for this cycle is a rigorous study in stylistic agility. We dare our roster to pivot seamlessly across completely distinct musical landscapes, demanding excellent dynamic range, vocal flexibility, and a deep collective focus on genre-specific authenticity:

  • Contemporary & Classical Textures: We demand absolute pitch perfection and fluid, floating lines for the lush architecture of Maurice Duruflé (Ubi Caritas et Amor), Susan LaBarr (Angele Dei), and Hans Bridger Heruth (When You Are Old), balanced against the fierce, high-octane velocity of Ernani Aguiar (Salmo 150), Thomas LaVoy (Alleluia), and György Orbán (Daemon Irrepit Callidus).

  • The Depth of the Choral African American Spiritual: We require deep acoustic resonance and emotional gravity to handle the complex polyphony and profound historical weight of masterworks by Nathaniel Dett (O Holy Lord), the driving energy of Stacey Gibbs (Wade in the Water), Ysayë Barnwell (Wanna Die Easy When I Die), and the legendary arrangements of Moses Hogan (Give Me Jesus, I Want Jesus to Walk with Me).

  • Raw Gospel Fire: We push vocal production to its absolute limits, unleashing uninhibited, soaring power and authentic stylistic tone through the intricate harmonies of Richard Smallwood (Healing), Donald Vails (The Storm Is Passing Over), and Nathan Carter (If I Can Help Somebody).

  • Sophisticated Jazz, Soul & Songbook: We shift vocal color entirely into the razor-thin, tight jazz harmonies of Greg Murai (Pure Imagination) and the gritty, secular groove of Sam Cooke's classic (Bring It on Home to Me).

This program is chosen specifically for the vocal purist—the singer who wants to pair artistic precision with deep, communicative heart across every style we touch.

What to Expect at Our Oakland Rehearsals

Because we prioritize the final artistic product above all else, our rehearsal structure is built for focused, independent musicians:

  • Independent Preparation: Scores (sheet music) are distributed a full month in advance. We completely skip basic note-pounding in rehearsal so we can focus on interpretation, dynamic balance, and locking in our signature ensemble sound.

  • Artistry-First July Sessions: Our 8 intensive rehearsals are spent exclusively on fine-tuning micro-nuances, balancing section colors, and sculpting a resonant vocal blend.

  • A Dedicated Peer Group: Our collaborative 40-singer roster brings together passionate, high-caliber vocalists with deep choral experience. You will be surrounded by responsive musicians who prepare thoroughly, listen deeply, and match your artistic energy.
